Overview

Chicago-Kent College of Law is proud to offer a one-year LL.M. in International Intellectual Property Law, the first such degree to be offered by a United States law school.

With this unique program, U.S. and foreign attorneys holding first degrees in law can specialize in one of the most dynamic and rapidly changing legal fields. Offered as a one-year, full-time program, the LL.M. in International Intellectual Property Law requires intensive study of a range of courses dealing with both intellectual property and international law topics.

To earn the one-year LL.M. degree in International Intellectual Property Law (IIP LL.M.), students will be required to complete 24 credit hours total. Seventeen credits must be from the required courses below, including Legal Writing 4 for International LL.M. students. The required courses must be taken for a grade (A, B, C, etc.) unless the course is offered only Pass/Fail. Outside the 17 required credits below, students may choose any other courses to meet the remaining seven credits necessary to graduate.

Requirements for Completion of the IIP LL.M. (24 credits)

  1. Legal Writing 4 for International LL.M. students (3 credits)
  2. International Intellectual Property Law (3 credits)
  3. Introduction to American Legal System (2 credits) (waived for U.S. J.D. grads)
  4. Six credit hours from Group 1 and 3 credits from Group 2 below
  5. Seven credit hours consisting of any other courses chosen by student

Group 1: Intellectual Property Courses (6 credits)

  1. Copyright Law (3 or 4 credits as offered)
  2. Patent Law (3 credits)
  3. Trademarks and Unfair Competition Law (3 or 4 credits as offered)
  4. Trade Secrets Law (3 credits)
  5. Advertising and Marketing Law (2 credits)
  6. Biotechnology Patent Law (2 credits)
  7. Design Law (2 or 3 credits as offered)
  8. Intellectual Property and Licensing (2 credits)
  9. Software Patents (2 credits)
  10. Video Game Law (2 credits)
  11. Blockchain and the Law (2 credit course, only 1 credit for Group 1)
  12. Emerging Technologies (2 credit course, only 1 credit for Group 1)
  13. Other designated courses (ask program director)
